Font Research - MYA

We experimented with different fonts to decide what font we wanted to use to represent our artist. We knew that we definitely wanted to use a bold font that was very clear, and easy to associate with our artist. We chose to use the last font, Arial as it is very simple and bold so it stands out and looks the neatest. The font we have chosen is very sleek and this is what we intend our audience to think about our artist, that she is sleek and stands out from other artists.

Chosen Autograph

This is the autograph we chose to represent MYA when she signs merchandise for fans as she gets more famous.

Autograph Ideas

We decided that we should create an autograph to represent our artist. We drafted some signatures for MYA for when she has to sign merchandise, posters and other things for fans as she gets more famous. These are what we came up with.

Shooting Schedule

This is the rest of the footage that we need to film for the rest of the music video.

·         Record Lollie going back to bed – opening the door, going up the stairs and then getting into bed (06/12/2016)

·         Record lip syncing – graffiti wall with black and white effect (white top and then hair in bun – half up half down) (07/12/2016)

·         Have Lollie, Ella, Charlotte sitting down and having a drink together – holding up phone to take a photo (07/12/2016)

Final Magazine Cover

We decided to redo the magazine cover and use a photo that represents our artist better as we have changed her image slightly. The makeup we used on Mya is more natural and a bit more glamorous as opposed to the funky bright coloured makeup that we used on her originally.

Digipak - Front Cover Inspiration

We took inspiration for the front cover of our digipak from an image of Selena Gomez from her music video 'Good for you'. We took inspiration from this image as Selena Gomez is also a young, pop, female artist similar to MYA. We also took inspiration from this image as it featured the artist with slightly wet hair which fit perfect with our music video as MYA is shown in the video getting into the shower.

Digipack - First Drafts

These are both of our digipacks. They are both first drafts and are not finished. The first digipack is the digipack for 'No Pressure' and the second digipack is the digipack for 'Love Now'.

Website Feedback

Generally most people who marked our website gave an average of 7/10. Lots of the comments included that we needed to make links for our social media pages so that people can click straight on the link and go to our social media pages. Some other comments included that the tour page should have more links to it where people can buy the tickets. A lot of people really liked our merchandise page. Also some people thought that our 'About Me' page should be the first thing that comes up on the website.

Here are a few comments we received back on our website:
  • MYA- The one thing that annoys me is that you do not have a link that sends you straight into the social media accounts. This could be an underlying factor because some people do not have the patience to find your Instagram account by using the URL code for example. Accessibility is key in websites. With the tour dates it’s just a load of scribble, maybe have links which take you to an area where you can book the tickets for example. Make it look as professional as you can. As if it’s your business, make it evident how you can pay for these tour dates.

  • MYA – Good design, however not much to it, flesh it out a bit. The social media pages are not linked, could include this, would make it more professional and would add another feature to your site to improve user interaction. The Instagram logo needs the white background remove otherwise it look a bit tacky. Also what is the idea with the yellow for social media, and different title colours, there is no continuity between the titles for each section of your site. 6-10

  • First photos are nice. The arrows guide you well. Icons of social media could look better (cut out white). Shall I scroll or click links? A lot of scrolling down the pages to see all of information. Really like the colour scheme and photos used. Merchandise is clean and well done. Nice text on tour. Think the text should match the title and the boarder. Social on every page.

  • the best one

  • Not sure that I like the collage of the photos as you enter the page, they are good photos but could be too many of them as they take up a lot of the room. The tour page looks a bit basic. The gallery looks really good. I like the about me page. Merch looks really good, I love the shoes.

  • Merch page looks professional Text on About Me page is really good Think every page should be individual instead of just being all on one page Need more on Home page instead of just picture – combine About page and Home? Should have social media links instead of just having username Cant click photos Not sure about colour yellow of button when you’re on it Level 3 – 7

  • Would be good if you could navigate through the photos, merchandise is good and some of the products are unique (teddy bear and shoes), maybe the home page picture could be a single picture instead of tile effect? good colour scheme of black and white with a pop of colour. - 6/10 Level 2

Video Feedback

We had our first draft videos shown to a music video director and he gave our video some positives and negatives which I think are very useful in helping us decide how we want to complete our music video.

MYA:
LOVE the POV stuff - that’s really current at the moment, great way of adding interest on a budget. Take out the black flashes around 1 minute. They’re distracting - the piece has a really nice feel that’s easy to get lost in. The black flashes draw attention to the editing process. The time-lapse and POV content make for a really honest and almost documentary-esque feel - very nice. The narrative needs to end: Does she go back to sleep? Give the narrative a nice circular structure. It almost feels like a complete day in the life, make sure it’s rounded off at the end. If she can’t shoot any more, end on a time-lapse of the sun setting perhaps. Somethings a little garish about the vocal performance - maybe hide with a black and white grade?

First Draft Feedback

The first drafts of everyone's videos were shown to the students to gather feedback on it so far. We showed both of the videos that we had recorded. Below is the feedback that we got.

Love Now
  • Green screen - film in drama studio instead, black and white at the start should carry on or be more dramatic when it changes, friends- its fun and its young, traffic time lapse - too long and irrelevant, its unique and prefer this one
  • Much more creative, fun to watch
  • Better story with good shots
  • Flashing ticks were a bit too much, time lapse too long, use some different shots other than POV, use different frame shots and stabilize them and needs more lip syncing
  • Too many shots in one place, could do with more close ups
  • Looks more professional and add in lip syncing, too many black screens
  • Needs more integrated singing shots and has good footage
  • Love lip sync with the POV, locations make the POV really nice but needs more close ups
  • Time lapse too long with not enough lip syncing
  • Love the story but the car scene is too long and needs more of Lollie singing
  • Can't read message on the phone and car section seems irrelevant
  • Time lapse too long, lip syncing not in time but like the Go Pro idea

No Pressure
  • Needs lighting improvement
  • Eye contact needs to be made more, too long shots, colour correct on the stool, not sure what else you could do, becomes boring
  • Shots are on too long, needs more locations, dull
  • Quite boring
  • Love the black and white and Lollie looks pretty
  • Some shots are too long, could have some sparks of colour, like the black and white shot on the chair and colouring needs looking at
Based on the feedback it seems the students preferred the Love Now video so we decided to back and use this as our video and song.

Inspiration

After looking at some other videos for more inspiration. Another video that we found was the Vamps - All Night. It was similar to ours in the sense that they do the POV with a wide view however they keep giving the camera to another person to show all of the group. This could have been a good idea for us to do as we could have shown the main artist.

No Pressure - lyrics analysis

Digipack Feedback

After everyone has given in their first draft of their digipack, individually we looked through all of the digipacks the groups had created and gave our opinions on them.

Annika
I like the colour scheme and the photos are good quality and the artist looks pretty. On the image with black writing the word ‘stay’ is a bit unclear and could be put in a more bold text to make it stand out more. Personally not a big fan of the text of the song titles as it is a bit hard to read or it should be bolder. Needs to be finished.

AVA
I really like the red theme. I prefer the pictures used on the red digipack so I think you should use those pictures just make the theme yellow. I really like the front cover picture and I think it has good editing on it. The left cover is a bit boring so maybe put some text over it or another picture on top of it. I also really like the back cover picture and think that is very original. Although you need to show synergy between the digipack and the website and the video.

Avenue
I like the top three pictures where it is the boys where the lyrics cover their faces as I like the black and white and then the pop of colour on their faces.  I think there is a big difference between the top row of photos and the bottom row of faces and it looks quite messy. I like the front cover but personally don’t really like the background you have used on the bottom row of photos. I think the text on the list of songs on the album should maybe be in a bolder colour so that it stands out more. I think the colour of the cd which is grey doesn’t go with the theme of the digipack or the yellow writing on the CD. The yellow writing on the CD should maybe be changed to either red, blue or green so that it matches with the rest of the digipack.

Iuris
I really like your digiack! I think it is really unique and different and fits well with your video and your website. I really like all of the pictures you have used as none are in the same location yet they are similar because the artist is wearing the same clothes. As your artist is quite ‘hipster’ I think you have showed this in the digipack. I really like all of the writing around all of the images as I think it is very unique and different.

Tori Lorente
I like the colour scheme on the digipack but there has to be synergy with the video so is there black and white scenes in your video? I really like the picture you have used for the front cover but I think the text on this picture needs to be bigger and bolder as it is the front cover so it needs to stand out. I think the picture on the bottom left and the top left should have some writing or something over the top of it so that they are a bit more interesting.

Ivory
I really like the front cover picture you have used and I really like where you have placed the text and the font of the text. I think you should have a more interesting picture for the CD and a more interesting background for the CD rather than just plain grey. I think the picture of the woods is a bit random as it is in black and white and your video is in colour and it is a bit too plain and boring. I like the picture of Tilly with her lipstick smudged as that shows synergy with the video. I think the writing that you have used for the list of songs needs to be bolder.

Luella
I like the red and black theme as this is also shown in your video. I think the CD picture and the picture of the red smoke are very similar and shouldn’t be placed next to each other or add some text or a picture over the top to make them more different. I like how you have written the song titles as I think the white writing stands out from the red and black in the picture. I don’t personally like the picture of the pond with the song lyrics on as I think the picture is too empty so maybe you should put the text all over the whole picture.

Stellato Star
I really like the front cover, I think the text is in a good place and it stand out also I like the colours used. I like the picture you have used for behind the songs on the album but I think the red writing doesn’t really stand out from the picture so maybe you should put it in white or make it bolder so that it stands out more from the picture behind it. I like how you have done the CD. I think the black and white picture is a bit too similar to the front cover so maybe you should change that do a different picture or put some editing on it to make it more different from the front cover.

Sempa
I like the editing used on the top left and bottom middle picture as it makes them different and unique. I like the picture on the top right as it goes well with the video but I think it could have some writing to something on it to make it a bit more interesting and eye-catching. I think the picture with the ‘keep clear’ sign is quite plain and maybe you should use the black and white for the front cover as it is the most interesting picture.

Heidi Holmes
I don’t really think there is much synergy with the video and the digiack as there is a lot of pink on the digipack. I like the picture you have used for the front cover as the artist is represented well. I like how the theme of travel is shown through the whole digipack. I personally don’t really like the bottom left picture as the text is not very bold and doesn’t stand out very much. I think the picture of the shoes and the leaves doesn’t really go with the digipack as it is a lot of black which isn’t in the rest of the digipack and it is a bit cliché.

Proof of work

Locations and Settings

For the new song choice we have decided on the locations and settings.

We put a sofa in the back garden in which we will record at night. We took inspiration from Selena Gomez music video good for you. However we wanted to change it up and being in a garden would make it stand out and more different.

Again taking inspiration from the Selena Gomez Good for you video we wanted to do parts in the shower with some cool ticking shots. I have a walk in shower so we will use this to recreate it.

Shooting Schedule

As a group we completely changed the whole idea of the music video. We used a whole day of filming at Lollie's house and managed to get all of the footage we needed in one day.

Magazine Article Research

Today we are creating a magazine article for MYA to go with the magazine cover we have created. We looked for inspiration by researching 'Rolling Stone' magazine articles that Rihanna has done, as that is the cover that we took inspiration from, but as Rihanna is such a famous artist, there weren't any articles that we could relate to because MYA is an upcoming artist. We searched 'Halsey' magazine articles as she is a new artist and we found a picture we liked and recreated it.

Magazine Cover

This is the first draft which Lollie made for the magazine cover. We decided not to go with this design and started completely again as we were not happy with it.

After we decided to start the magazine cover again we looked again at past magazine covers and decided to change from 'Billboard' to 'Rolling Stones'. Once we had decided which brand we wanted to do the magazine cover with we looked through some old covers and then found we wanted to replicate Rihanna's past Rolling Stones cover.

This is the new magazine cover for MYA and Rihanna's cover which we took inspiration from:

Tour posters

These are the two posters which me and Charlotte have created. We have decided to use Charlottes poster as the tour poster which is the darker one and use my tour poster for inside the magazine. Both of the posters show synergy for MYA as both include smoke and the black and white theme.

Halfway Presentation Feedback

After presenting our halfway evaluation we got a range of feedback from the other students in the class. Feedback will be used so that we can improve our video and other products. Each student filled out a feedback sheet regarding different parts of the artist.

Shooting material appropriate
  • Excellent variety of locations, slightly faster cuts are need and want to see how it ends.
  • POV is a good idea, good use of friend images to go to the beach to show their friendship.
  • POV is edgy.
  • Camera is steady, good framing, could use more shots such as close ups and high angles.
  • Doesn't match with synergy, theme of white, silver and black is continued through - could be used in the lip syncing parts.
  • Lip syncing needs to be filmed and try different framing options.
Website
  • Black and White is the theme, does it fit with the music. Fix spelling on management.
  • Good website with synergy.
  • Good but needs a shop and show album.
  • Font for the tour dates and the font throughout the website need changing.
  • Logo should be at the top of the website not written.
  • Good website but needs more content, does the colour scheme fit with the artist.
  • Website is good but could be linked to the digipack more.
Digipack
  • Matches well with the website and beautiful images. Lighting could be looked at.
  • Good digipack and good editing with the photos.
  • Sexy.
  • Lightning looks a bit out and parental advisory needs to be smaller.
  • Lovely theme.
Brand Image
  • Go Pro idea is really good - the image of the artist is consistent.
  • Brand image is carried through everything, which is good and use the logo on the website for better synergy. Friendship is shown throughout.
  • English/American singer - which one?
  • Clean and edgy - the theme is continued throughout.
  • Great, like the edgy theme and clean.
  • Does the music video suit edgy - carousel isn't edgy.
Targeting of Audience
  • 15 plus and aimed at both genders - professional throughout.
  • Clear target teenagers and early adults.
  • Our age?
  • Teenagers.
  • 16-21?
Would you watch it again
  • Yes, faster cuts and performance. Day to night - colour correction.
  • Could use friendship to lip sync whilst with MYA, not completed yet.
  • No - use of the same things, sing in more/different locations.
  • Contrast editing on the misty shots.
  • Didn't find it interesting, but when the lip syncing is included it will be more interesting.
  • Yes interesting but could change the order up so it has more of a build up.

Band Font Brand Research

Lots of artists use a specific symbol or sign to represent them. Artists will use this symbol on album covers and other releases to show fans that is it them.

As a group we want to create a symbol/logo which would be personal to us and would symbolise MYA.

Behind The Scenes

These are some behind the scenes footage of our first official day of filming for the music video.

Textural Analysis of Music Video

The music video I have chosen to analyse is MO - Final Song. I chose this song as it is a pop, feel good song which is similar to our chosen song.

Camera
This video uses a very large amount of close ups, mid shots, long shots and extreme long shots. There is a good mix of different angles used and the performer is not only shown in the middle of the framing but is shown in different areas of the framing.

Sound
The song is a pop, feel good song. During the music video there is no sound other than the song itself. There is no added sounds in the background.

Mise en scene
The costumes used in this music video are very 'hipster' and different. The costumes fit the genre of the music video and suit the performer. The main singer is the main performer in the video and half way through the music video dancers are added into the video. The main performer has used quite subtle makeup and simple hair styles. There are interestingly no props used in this music video as the performer is only singing or dancing. The setting of the music video is in a deserted area with only mountains and rocks in the background.

Editing
There is lots of editing used to create this video. There are lots of straight cuts in the video especially when the tempo of the songs picks up. Also there is a lot of special effects used for example:

30 Second Breakdown - Music Video

I have chosen to break down this music video as it is a feel good song similar to our song choice and includes some shots in front of a graffiti wall which we also want to include in our video.

0:00-0:03 - At the very beginning of the video there is a time-lapse of the LA skyline going from dark to light.

0:03-0:05 - The next shot is a mid shot of the girls legs walking down the street.

0:05-0:08 - The next shot is another mid shot of the top half of the girls looking at each other and laughing.

0:08-0:09 - Next is a close up of one of the girls side profile whilst lip syncing the words to the song.

0:09-0:10 - The next shot is a long shot of the performers full body leaning against a graffiti wall whilst lip syncing the words.

0:10-0:11 - The next shot is a mid shot back to the group of girls where one of them is shown spinning around whilst walking down the street.

0:11-0:12 - This shot is a close up of one of the performers lip syncing the words to the song.

0:12-0:13 - The next shot is the same close up as the shot before however with a different performer lip syncing the words.

0:13-0:14 - The next shot is a long shot of the girls all together walking down the street.

0:14-0:15 - Next is a close up of two of the girls lip syncing whilst walking down the street.

0:15-0:0:17 - The next shot is a long shot of the girls full body walking down the street.

0:17-0:0:18 - The next shot is a close up of one of the performers with her face in the centre of the framing lip syncing the song.

0:18 - 0:19 - The next shot is a mid shot of three of the performers whilst one of them is lip syncing the song.

0:19-0:20 - Next there is a close up of one of the performance smiling not directly into the camera whilst there is singing still in the background.

0:20-0:21- This shot is a mid shot of all of the performers legs which then pans up into a long shot of the full body of all of the performers.

0:21-0:22 - Next there is a close up of one of the performers looking into the distance.

0:22-0:24 - Next there is another close up of one of the performers who is smiling away from the camera and then slowly looks back to the camera.

0:24-0:25 - The next shot is a close up of one of the performers who is lip syncing the words to the song.

0:25-0:27 - The next shot is a mid shot of the performers laughing and one of them is spinning around whilst they are all walking down the street.

0:27-0:28 - Next is a mid shot of all of the performers walking down the street laughing with each other.

0:28-0:29 - The next shot is a close up of one of the performers who is smiling into the distance not looking into the camera and not lip syncing.

0:29-0:30 - The next shot is a close up of one of the performers with equal framing looking down to the floor at the start of the shot and then whilst lip syncing looks up into the camera.

Song Pitch Feedback

On September 29th me and Ella presented the new song choice to the class to gather feedback and ideas on what we can do for the video. We wanted to see if we could get some new ideas to work alongside what we already had. Feedback was positive and this is what we got from other students:
  • Change scene on the pauses in the song, as beat changes the scene also changes. This is called thought beats.
  • Black and white effects.
  • Colourful
  • Southbank - colourful wall / graffiti wall
  • Edgy main character
  • Group of people attack Lollie as she is walking to the camera and then gets up and walks away to add a weird narrative (Zombie Style)
  • POV throughout the whole video
From the feedback we decided that the thought beats would be a good idea especially as we have quite a few filming locations that we can keep changing back and forth to. We also thought that we would be better off going for the colourful option instead of black and white but we will play around with that in editing to see what looks better, but based on the upbeat mood of the song I think we will choose to go colourful.
We may potentially film in London so if we do then we can go to Southbank and go to the colour wall however there is a graffiti wall in Chelmer Village that will probably be easier for us to go to and film. We like the idea of an edgy main character which we are going to use. We did not like the idea of a group of people attacking the main character so we will not be using that. We like the idea of the POV, our opening scene is going to be a POV shot of a woman waking up in the morning and doing her routine. Then POV theme throughout then puts down and then records the three girls together. POV at beginning of each shot and then setting changes. Up close of main girl singing just of face with lots of bright colours and editing.

Steal-O-Matics

Taking inspiration from other videos this is some of the footage we would like to see I our video. We want to use some cool effects and we want to get as much footage as possible so we have a lot to work with. A lot of the videos work well with the music and it is interesting all of the different shots.
