Song Pitch Feedback
On September 29th me and Ella presented the new song choice to the class to gather feedback and ideas on what we can do for the video. We wanted to see if we could get some new ideas to work alongside what we already had. Feedback was positive and this is what we got from other students:
We may potentially film in London so if we do then we can go to Southbank and go to the colour wall however there is a graffiti wall in Chelmer Village that will probably be easier for us to go to and film. We like the idea of an edgy main character which we are going to use. We did not like the idea of a group of people attacking the main character so we will not be using that. We like the idea of the POV, our opening scene is going to be a POV shot of a woman waking up in the morning and doing her routine. Then POV theme throughout then puts down and then records the three girls together. POV at beginning of each shot and then setting changes. Up close of main girl singing just of face with lots of bright colours and editing.
- Change scene on the pauses in the song, as beat changes the scene also changes. This is called thought beats.
- Black and white effects.
- Colourful
- Southbank - colourful wall / graffiti wall
- Edgy main character
- Group of people attack Lollie as she is walking to the camera and then gets up and walks away to add a weird narrative (Zombie Style)
- POV throughout the whole video

Steal-O-Matics
Taking inspiration from other videos this is some of the footage we would like to see I our video. We want to use some cool effects and we want to get as much footage as possible so we have a lot to work with. A lot of the videos work well with the music and it is interesting all of the different shots.
Production Diary
Day 1. 22nd September. In todays lesson we pitched our song choices to the class. We played the songs without the video on the screen so we could get ideas from the class about what we should include in our music video, and the sort of vibes they got from the song. We wrote all of their points down, and discussed them later as a group.
Day 2. 23rd September.
Today, we all listened to our choice of song and filmed ourselves lip syncing to them to see who looked best doing in and who would then go on to become the performer. It was hard, as we wasn't in the best environment and was laughing throughout some of the videos. We have a choice of two songs and feel is though each song is best suited to two different performers. Although this is the recorded version of the lip syncing, we are going to re do the auditions more privately.
Day 3. 26th September.
We had a setback regarding our choice of song due to the song we had chosen 'closer' making its way up in the top charts and therefore becoming too popular for us to make a video too, as it is very likely that the chain smokers would release an official video for the song and therefore would influence our video too much. As a result of this, we took this lesson to research other songs we could potential use and ended up choosing 'Love Now - Calvin Harris.' Although Calvin Harris is a popular and famous artist, the song we have chosen has never been released as a single and doesn't feature Calvin Harris in the vocals, the vocals are sung by an artist called 'All About She.'
Day 4. 27th September.
The priority of todays lesson was to really get started in the preparation and planning of our music video. We allocated every group member jobs to do. Ella was in charge of carrying out the risk assessment, Lollie was gathering all of our ideas together for the visuals of the music videos and is then making a start on the steal-o-matics. Later on that day Ella and Lollie worked in media and Ella completed the timings for the lyrics and Lollie completed the steal-o-matics.
Day 5. 29th September
Lollie and Ella presented the new song to the class and we were given lots of feedback for ideas for the music video from the class, We then sat down with Mrs Brookes and discussed what we should do in our music video and our final decisions.
Day 6, 30th September
During todays lesson Lollie worked on writing out the class feedback and the shooting schedule. Ella finished the website analysis and uploaded it to the blog. Lollie and Ella also started the storyboard.
Day 7. 3rd October.
This evening we went to our first location and started to film. We all went to the A12 bridge and started filming a time lapse of the cars moving on the road below. We arrive there at 6pm and filmed until 7.30. It was just a still shot for an hour that we intend to speed up and cut down to about 5 seconds. We purposely went in the evening as we knew that the sunset was at 6.30pm. The shot shows the sun setting and created an excellent shot when it is all sped up.
Day 8. 4th October.
In todays lesson we gathered our footage from the time-lapse of the cars and edited it so that it was sped up. We then went on to complete some individual tasks for our blogs. I researched music videos in the same genre as our song and analysed them in terms of the editing, mise n scene, camera shots and sound. This was helpful as it allowed to see how other artists have portrayed there song in a visual music video and allowed us to have an insight into some ideas we could potential adapt for our own music video. Today we also created social media accounts for MYA including Twitter, Snap chat and Instagram. The social media usernames are @__myaofficial.
Day 9. 5th October.
We didn't have a media lesson today however after school we all went back to Ella's house and started to get ready for the photo shoot we are doing so that we have photos of MYA for our Digi - pack, and also for the profile photos of MYA's social media accounts, to finally put a face to the name. After we had taken the photos, we went back to school so we could use the green room to film some lip syncing for part of the video. We needed to use the green room so that we can replace the background with a metallic chrome type background to make it look edgy and cool.
Day 10. 6th October.
In todays lesson we started the editing process for our video. We reviewed all the footage and analysed snippets of each clip. We spent about 3 hours doing this as we made sure it was perfect and tried lots of different backgrounds for our green screen. We were really happy with how the footage had turned out, and this made us excited about the rest of our music video.
Day 11. 7th October.
Today, Ella and Charlotte recorded the story board for our music video. We wrote a script before recording so that it would be easier to film as opposed to having to keep starting again if we messed up. We then uploaded the footage to Adobe Premiere and edited it. We included still photos of our initial story board so that when the voice over was playing, the audience could see what we were speaking about. When we had finished editing it, we uploaded it to youtube and then uploaded it to our blog.
Day 12. 10th October.
Todays tasks were to create a photo shoot for MYA. We needed to do a photoshoot so that we can add images to our social media accounts, and regularly upload photos to keep the 'fans' updated. We gave Lollie a makeover and done a couple of different makeup looks and hairstyles. We managed to get some really good photos, that had a touch of professionalism. The hairstyles and makeup looks we done were funky and edgy to continue the persona of MYA that we had created. In the media lesson we had today, we also created the website for MYA where we plan to include tour dates, social media accounts, contact details, merchandise and also a list of the songs on the upcoming album.
Day 13. 11th October.
Today we uploaded all of the photos we had taken the day before to the computer and edited them to make them look professional and flawless. We uploaded them to @__myaofficial social media accounts; Instagram and Twitter. We also created a list of songs for out album and uploaded them onto the website. As well as this, we uploaded lots of other things to our website. We linked the Instagram account to the website, so that every time we post from the @__myaofficial account it goes straight onto the website. The social media account names were also added to the website, along with contact details for MYA's 'management' team; Charlotte and Ella. On the website there is also a personal message from MYA to her fans.
Day 14. 12th October.
Today we went to a graffiti wall in Chelmsford town and got some footage of MYA lip-syncing to our track 'love now'. We experimented with the go pro and also the camera that the school had provided us. We was at this location for a couple of hours. We experimented in ways to film such as resting the camera on the window of charlottes car and filming whilst driving in a clean circle to get a 360 degree shot of MYA while she was dancing and moving in a circular motion, this made it look like the camera was following her.
8th November.
In todays lesson we worked on the half way evaluation power point. We all had different slides to do in the power point. We also updated some of our social media accounts, we posted a photo on instagram from the myaoffical account.
9th November.
After going through all of the footage we have in todays lesson, we decided that we needed to refilm the lip syncing footage as we felt as though the outfit and the styling of MYA in the footage didn't really go with the artist we have created up to this point. We also felt that as we have been making this music video for a while, and Lollie has got used to being the performer, we would be able to film the footage again at a higher standard now in order to gain the top marks for performance. Throughout creating this music video, we have included smoke effects on our digi pack and photos and therefore thought it would be a good idea to use a smoke machine while filming the lip syncing to create synergy with our other work.
10th November.
In todays lesson, we reviewed all of the footage from the night before and chose the clips in which we thought looked the most professional and then added them into our music video and started to play around with the editing. As we filmed our lip syncing with a green screen in the back ground, we found it very difficult to use the green screen in the way that we wanted, which was to put a metallic silver background behind MYA lip syncing, but where we had used the smoke machine, it was very difficult to edit and did not look professional at all. As we also filmed the lip syncing without the smoke machine, as it allowed us to use the green screen background as we originally wanted to.
11th November.
The whole class presented their half way evaluations today. The half way evaluations included sneak previews of our music videos so far and also all about our artist. It also included showing our website and digi pack. After each group had finished presenting, we scored them out of 50 in terms of their brand image, website, digi-pack, clear target audience and appropriate music genre. With the feedback we received, we gathered it all together and discussed it all as a group and took on board the suggestions that were made.
14th November.
In todays lesson Charlotte and Ella made a tour poster for MYA that we could potentially use. The colours fit with the whole theme of our artist, and the smoke effect we have put on the poster mimic the theme of the digi-pack showing iconic synergy. Charlottes poster features more dark, grungy colours whereas Ella's as a white background and is genuinely quite light. We have both used different fonts and displayed it all differently, but we have both used the same photo as the main feature on the poster but edited differently.
15th November.
In todays lesson Lollie designed a magazine cover. We took inspiration from other billboard magazine covers such as Rihanna, Beyoncé, Adele. This isn't our final magazine cover, we wanted to see what worked and what didn't, so we experiment with different colours and themes. We decided that a black and white photograph on the cover would suit the theme we have created for MYA better. On the digi pack and tour poster, we have used grungy colours so we are now going to create another magazine cover to suit the theme of the other work we have done, using iconic synergy. Later on today we all came back to the media room and put in another couple of hours of work. we designed another magazine cover, which looked much better. We chose a rolling stone cover of Rihanna and created a cover based on it. We used the same design. 16th November.
17th November.
Today we created a magazine article for MYA to go with the magazine cover we have created. We looked for inspiration by researching 'Rolling Stone' magazine articles that Rihanna has done, as that is the cover that we took inspiration from, but as Rihanna is such a famous artist, there weren't any articles that we could relate to because MYA is an upcoming artist. We searched 'Halsey' magazine articles as she is a new artist and we found a picture we liked and recreated it.
18th November.
Today we reviewed all of our footage and watched our music video to try and gain a perspective of what we still needed to do. We still need to film quite a lot in order to make our video the standard that we want it to be so we can get the marks that we are aiming for. We sat down as a group and discussed times and dates where we can film, and the locations we could film at. We also discussed outfits and styling ideas.
22nd November.
In todays lesson we updated our social media accounts, we posted on instagram a picture of the tour poster and also posted it on twitter. We also relooked at the magazine article that we had created and double checked it and added some more to it. We changed the layout of it ever so slightly and moved the images slightly aswell. Although the changes we made were small it made the article seem that little bit more professional.
24th November.
In todays lesson we took the time to get ourselves sorted in terms of our blogs, Charlotte updated the production diary. We spoke more about what we was going to do when we next started filming so we were prepared, we spoke about camera angles and lengths of shots. We also discussed what we thought had gone well so far and what hasn't worked as well as we hoped so we know what to do the next time we start filming. For example, when we re-filmed the lip syncing footage, we used a smoke machine in the foreground to create synergy with the rest of our merchandise and our digi-pack and magazine covers and also our tour posters. When we looked at the footage again we found that the smoke in the foreground of the shot of the lip syncing meant we couldn't use the green screen in the way that we wanted because it kept interfering with the background we had chosen. We learnt from this that if we were to use the smoke machine again we should try it in the background of the shot, behind Lollie and see how that works or just try and edit it smoke in or film it separately to the lip syncing.
25th November.
Today we again used our lesson time to update our blogs so we don't fall behind. Charlotte continued to update the production diary and Ella and Lollie reviewed their blogs and made sure they were up to date. We also gathered some feedback from the magazine article that Mrs Brookes had looked at and used it to make amendments.
28th November.
Today we all sat down as a group and watched our video through and we felt like we had hit a dead end. Throughout the process of making our music video, we had another idea of a slower paced song called 'No Pressure - Pia Mia'. We listened to the song and started to brainstorm some ideas for the possibility of re filming our music video to a different song, while still keeping the same persona we have created for MYA, the same website, digi-pack and social media accounts. We haven't made a decision yet whether or not we are going to re-film our video but we thought it would be a good idea to gather our thoughts and ideas together to at least keep our options open. We have been researching videos of a similar genre for our steal-o-matic ideas, and overall feel excited by the thought of filming a new video with more of a performance in it to really show of our artist and make it look more professional.
Day 2. 23rd September.
Today, we all listened to our choice of song and filmed ourselves lip syncing to them to see who looked best doing in and who would then go on to become the performer. Final Song Choice
For our final song choice we have decided to do a music video for 'Love Now' by Calvin Harris feat, All About She. We have decided to use our ideas from previous song choices and put them with this song as we feel this song works best with our ideas.
Lyrics
We must bear our souls, souls, souls
Let the fate we fight take hold, hold, hold
Baby when you come real close, close, close
It's alright cause I am whole
Cause I have been running too long
I wanna love now, I wanna love now, I wanna feel
Don't weight up this heart that you hold
I wanna love now, I wanna love now, I wanna feel
We can tiptoe round our dreams, dreams, dreams
Just to crash through reality, yeah
I won't spend it eternity
Hoping this time I'll be free, free
Cause I have been running too long
I wanna love now, I wanna love now, I wanna feel
Don't weight up this heart that you hold
I wanna love now, I wanna love now, I wanna feel
Cause I have been running too long
I wanna love now, I wanna love now, I wanna feel
Don't weight up this heart that you hold
I wanna love now, I wanna love now, I wanna feel
Ideas
We still want to incorporate our other ideas into the new song choice.
- Time Lapse of cars - standing on a bridge above the A12. This will be in the opening section of the video.
- POV of a woman getting ready before she goes out.
- Main character will then meet friends and we watch all the things that they do together.
- Shot of three girls in the car singing with the windows down and hair blowing.
- We have found a location in Burnham-on-crouch with a promenade and somewhere where they can jump into the sea. We want a shot from behind, a POV shot and also a shot when they are in the water and it will be an under water shot.
- For the chorus of the song we want two dancers dancing that we will make into black silhouette's and it will appear on the chorus.
- The main character will be edgy and cool. She will be lip syncing to parts of the song but it will be mainly performance based and following the story of the girl and her friends.
- We also want some shots of the girls arm holding someone else's arm.
- We may possibly include a shower scene however it may just be for the cover of our digi-pack
Song Pitch
Lip Sync Task
This is our Lip Sync Task. As we are still undecided of which song we would prefer to use we have lip synced a small section of both songs to try and see who would be best to be the performer. This was not the best environment to complete the task in however as we wanted to check both songs we just wanted to get a feel of singing both of them.
Cross Media Task
An artist needs to create an image for themselves which the audience can identify with. The artist needs to create synergy between their products. This is an example of cross media synergy for an artist:
The video, the front cover of the album and the digi pack which all have synergy.
The video, the front cover of the album and the digi pack which all have synergy.
Music Video Research
One of the first options for our potential music video is 'No Competition' by Empire
My second song choice is Gabrielle Aplin - Panic Cord (Hucci Remix):
My third song choice The Chainsmoker ft. Halsey- Closer:

Marking Student Videos
In todays lesson we went through some previous videos of past students and marked them using the mark criteria.
We watched this video as a class and altogether came to the decision that we would give this music video a level 4. This is because the students use a very wide variety of different shots and frame sizes. The colouring of the video is all very similar which creates a mood for the music video. Although this video would score a level 4 it would not get full marks as the narrative gets confusing as there is a lot of things going on during the video. Also some of the scenes do not fit the genre of the song.
The second video that we watched together as a class was:
As a class we came to an agreement that this video matched the criteria of a high level 2 or low level 3. This is because the video shows more than a basic level of ability however it does not demonstrate proficiency therefore would receive a low level 3 from our point of view. This is because most of the shots are too long for the pace of the song and could have used a bigger variety of shots.
This next video I have watched by myself to mark using the marking criteria. Personally I would give this video a level 2. This is because it shows very good editing skills however the video idea is not very creative and there is a very basic level of shots and framing used. Also the lip syncing is off in some clips. To improve this mark I think the group could have used more than one location to make the video more interesting.
This is the next video I watched and to mark against the marking criteria. I thought this music video deserved a mid level 4. This is because the narrative of the music video is very clear and also has very good lip-syncing. This is also a very good music video because they have used a wide variety of different shots and framing. However I would not give this group a high level 4 as they have not showed many editing skills.
This is the third video I watched and marked against the marking criteria. I would give this video a level 3 as they have demonstrated proficiency. The video has good colouring and has a good variety of shots. However I think the video is quite cliché and could have done something more interesting with the song.

Banana Phone Task
This is the banana phone task we were set as a class. This task was set to help us with our filming and editing skills. This task really helped me as I learnt new things on Adobe Premiere such as cloning which is the editing software we will use to edit our final music video. To improve this task we could have listened to the song more whilst filming as the lip syncing is not in time with the music.
Prelim Task Evaluation
1) Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
- For this prelim task I worked with Lollie. We managed the task well between us as we have worked together many times before so we knew how to work together well and be organized. We both shared equal parts in both filming and being in the video and also editing the video. As there was only two of us we had quite a lot of work to do but we shared it equally and managed to have a good outcome.
- As we had an unusual location for our music video we chose a video that would work well with our location. Once we chose which music video we wanted to recreate we were able to put together a story board so we knew which shots we needed to film and how long they were. We were also able to create a props list so we knew what to take to the location ready for filming and also a shooting schedule so that we knew which shots we were filming on which days and times.
- The music video that we chose was 'I got U' by Duke Dumont. A theory which could apply to the video is Carol Vernallis music video theory. This is because of the camerawork and shots used as shots are one of the main features of a music video and are used frequently which they are in 'I got U' by Duke Dumont.
- The technology we used to complete this task was a Samsung ST500 camera to film all of the shots for the music video. We also used an iPhone 5 with an underwater camera case to shoot the scene where the person dives into the pool. We also used technology when editing the music video as we used Adobe Premiere. We were able to use this software easily as we have used in previously.
- Some factors we had to take into account when planning the music video were we needed to plan our time carefully as we did not have much time to fully complete the task so we had to plan our time wisely to make sure we could get the task completed. We also had to take into account when planning that we had the correct equipment and props to take to the location with us. This is because if we did not bring certain props that we needed to film the music video we would have not been able to complete the task.
- I think our music video was very successful and we managed to create a very unique prelim task. I think me and Lollie worked very well together and also we managed to match the shots up very well with the actual music video. In hindsight I think when we were shooting the video we should have shot more of the scenes so that when it came to editing the video we had choices of which clips we wanted to use so that we could have the best clip for each shot.
- I have learnt from completing this task that shooting a music video and shooting a film opening are very different. There are many different shots and narratives used in a music video compared to a film opening. This learning will be significant when completing our music video as the filming and editing is extremely different to what we learned from our film opening. This prelim task has helped me get use to filming and editing for my music video as there is a big change.
- There is a vast difference between filming a film opening and filming a music video. I have learnt this from doing our prelim task. Filming a film opening is mainly about having the correct shots and angles, however I think music videos are mainly about have good cuts and sometimes not telling a narrative.
- Personally I think my strengths as a group member are I am very organized and like to know that the work is completed and to a good standard. However my weaknesses are I am quite impatient.
- I think the most successful group music video was One Direction 'History' which was made by Rory, JK, Nathan and Olly. This is because they matched the real video to their version extremely well and made sure all of the props, band members and location were very close to the real video.
Chosen video
Me and Lollie are in a group and have chosen to do Duke Dumont - I Got You. We are doing from 0.31 to 1.01 of the video.
